Over the years I have watched people labor over choosing the right puppy. Usually they are trying to choose based on who is the cutest, the fattest, the biggest, or the sweetest. I traditionally respond by saying “trying to choose based on that criteria, is like trying to choose which is the best cookie out of a large bag full.” It is as important to me, as it is to you, that you end up with the right puppy that suits your needs and life style. So far I have an excellent record in helping people make their decisions based on much more than just appearance.
First, I spend countless hours working with and observing my puppies. My observations help me understand their energy levels, their pack order, and their over all temperament. I ask each prospective owner to fill out the attached questionnaire. The questions help me understand what the life of your puppy will be and what you are looking for in a new family member. By the time the puppies are four weeks old, characteristics emerge that help me thoughtfully match what is important to you. Choosing the correct puppy is a collaborative process. Unfortunately, there are times when I do not have the correct puppy for you, or I do not think you currently are in a place to adopt one of my puppies. In such cases, I am quick to let you know, so not to waste anyone's time. With each litter, I reserve the option to choose first.
By the time the puppies are 7-8 weeks old, I use an assessment instrument referred to as the Volhard Puppy Temperament Test. This assessment provides a unique personality profile for your dog. The assessment evaluates prey, pack, and flight instincts. Scores on this test help solidify my observations, as it reveals more information about the personality of each puppy. People who wish to use their dogs to hunt are going to want a dog with a higher prey drive score than a dog who has a high pack drive. My observations, your completed honest answers on your questionnaire, and the Temperament Test have never failed me in placing a puppy correctly in perfect homes.
